Health insurance (KVG) covers all costs for the entire treatment of the disease, including the necessary diagnostic measures, medication, preventive care, aftercare, etc. Basic insurance covers the costs of treatment and necessary medication. Compulsory insurance offers the same benefits in all insurance companies.

Premiums 2022

The compulsory Basic health insurance  provides benefits in the event of illness, accident and maternity. All health insurers that provide mandatory health insurance must cover the same statutory scope of benefits. According to the law, the  only provides services that are effective, appropriate and economical. 

In recent years, we've been paying more and more for health insurance, even though our salaries remain the same. There are many ways to lower your mandatory health insurance premium.

Thanks to compulsory healthcare insurance, everyone residing in Switzerland has access to a good healthcare system that includes medical care, pharmacies and, if necessary, hospital services. If you work 8 hours a week, it insures your employer against accidents. You can therefore exclude accident insurance from your health insurance. Compulsory insurance offers the same benefits with all insurance companies.

Exclusion of accident coverage

The Accident Insurance Act stipulates that your employer insures you against occupational and non-occupational accidents if you work at least eight hours a week.

Accident insurance is compulsory in Switzerland and protects employees in Switzerland against the economic health consequences of accidents at work and occupational accidents or occupational diseases. The Accident Insurance Act stipulates that your employer will insure you against accidents if you work at least eight hours a week. In addition, domestic workers, trainees and cleaning staff in private homes must be insured. In Switzerland, housewives, children, students and pensioners must be insured against accidents as part of the compulsory health insurance KVG.

Choosing a higher deductible

In the regular insurance, the deductible (annual amount with which you contribute to the costs) is 300 CHF for adults (CHF 0 for children). You can choose a higher franchise and pay lower premiums for it.

Family doctor model

By choosing the family doctor model, you undertake to always consult your family doctor first, except in emergencies and consultations with an ophthalmologist, dentist and gynecologist.

Check your entitlement to premium reductions

People in modest economic circumstances are entitled to contributions to their health insurance premiums. Have you just settled in Switzerland?  Health insurance is compulsory in Switzerland, so you must take out insurance if you are domiciled in  Switzerland. Insurance coverage is individual.

Supplementary insurance

Hospital Insurance

Dental insurance

Dental insurance offers a comprehensive health service, from check-ups to tooth correction with highly qualified professional dental treatments. Teeth are vital and it is known that the cost of dental treatment in Switzerland is very high.

Alternative medicine

You are also fully protected for alternative medicine, especially if you prefer alternative healing methods. Conventional medicine and complementary medicine take a different approach. Conventional medicine is based on scientifically proven studies, while natural medicine is based on the use of certain methods that are not scientifically recognized. Sometimes, when conventional medical treatment doesn't work as expected, natural alternative medicine can be of great help for certain types of diseases.
What are the so-called complementary or alternative medical methods?

For example, homeopathy, acupuncture, traditional Chinese medicine, osteopathy, kinesiology, Bach flowers, phytotherapy, acupressure, shiatsu, reflexology, cranio-sacral therapy, aromatherapy, bioresonance, Ayurveda, lymphatic drainage, among others.

What are the reasons for using complementary medicine?
There are several reasons that are individual to each person, but the most common are to use less medication, treat chronic diseases, and relieve pain. Also for well-being, relaxation, disease prevention.

For what diseases or pains is alternative medicine used?
Some of the alternative medicine methods are used by doctors and physical therapists for back pain, joint pain, migraine headaches, chronic constipation, neck pain, menopause symptoms, etc.

How much does natural health insurance cost?
It depends on each insurer, not all have the same benefits.

Accident insurance

Employers are legally obliged to take out accident insurance for their employees. Depending on your company's area of activity, Suva or a private insurer is responsible. Note that compulsory accident insurance only offers limited benefits. The supplementary accident insurance covers the gaps in the compulsory insurance and offers better compensation in the event of an accident. In the event of disability as a result of an accident, there is additional insurance. In the event of disability, further development of benefits is possible up to 350% of the subscribed capital with worldwide coverage in private distributions in the event of hospitalization.

Travel insurancee

Travel insurance is responsible for covering medical expenses abroad. Even some insurance companies offer flight cancellation and financial assistance for the loss of documents such as passports.

Travel insurance is important, regardless of whether you are traveling alone, with friends or family and outside of Switzerland. It doesn't matter if you are on vacation or on business. Good travel insurance should include accident and health coverage, as well as repatriation, assistance and a range of supplemental insurances to protect you and your family.

What should I do in an emergency abroad?

If you need any assistance during your trip, all you have to do is call the insurance company, which usually has a support staff to help you with any queries.

How much does the compulsory insurance cover abroad?

Emergencies abroad EU and EFTA countries: in accordance with bilateral agreements. Other countries: up to twice the tariff of the canton of residence.

How long do I have to take out travel insurance?

The best and cheapest solution is to have travel insurance as additional cover all year round! The monthly premium remains the same even though you are only abroad for 1 week or 8 months (worldwide). And, if you spontaneously go on a weekend abroad and suddenly have a health problem ... it will be uncomfortable and expensive if you don't have insurance coverage.

Maternity Insurance

Health insurance is more important than ever when you're pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Health insurance covers prenatal care, childbirth, pediatric care and vaccinations for your baby. The prenatal registration is the registration of an unborn child with the health insurance company. The policy is fixed on the date of birth.


Registering your baby before the birth is very important for supplementary insurance. Since additional insurance is not compulsory, there is a possibility that your child will be born with complications and that additional insurance will be rejected. Basic Insurance Termination

  • Notice of cancellation must reach the insurer by registered mail on the last working day before the start of the notice period.  
  •   Cancellation must be received by registered mail on the last business day before the start of the notice period.
  •   It is not possible to change the health insurance for outstanding debts.
  • The new health insurance must send a confirmation of acceptance to the previous health insurance
